A school where fun never ends!

The school is buzzing right now! There has been so much activity lately at the school, and students are shining. Kids enjoyed spending a morning with their grandparents doing fun activities in all three languages, and they proudly showed them their work.In french they wrote a list poem about their favorite animal.For Mother’s Day, they wrote a recipe for a delicious smoothie. They love practicing their reading and writing skills through reading buddies and playing games so that they can review all the new and old vocabulary. We are currently learning about the different food categories such as poultry,red meat and seafood and this week they will be creating their own menus.. As the end of the school year is getting closer, I insist on them reading the Je lis books daily so they can finish Grade 2 positively and successfully.

What’s Happening in Grade 2?

Two months to summer vacation, however, here at the OJCS there is still work to be done. Take a look at just some of the highlights.

Recess: No more snowsuits!

Math:

Numbers/Algebra- This term we are practicing two or three digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, rounding numbers (to the nearest 10, 100 and/or 1,000) depending where you are in your learning journey. Further understanding the relationship between addition and multiplication, division and subtraction (explaining and sharing strategies) and fractions are just some of what we have covered within our numeracy blocks. As we work on every strand, ensuring they are working in their Just Right level. Remember the first step is demonstrating to me that they can independently complete the tasks assigned before moving on to that next level.

Coding- Our students have been introduced to Scratch Jr. Coding is the new literacy! With Scratch Jr., young children can program their own interactive stories and games. In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on the computer. These session take place in the Makerspace under the guidance of Mr. Ray.

 

 

Word Problems-  The students are working on solving measurement and fraction problems. There are two very important expectations that I reiterate each lesson, reread your problem before you start and always show your work.  My ultimate goal for them is to all love math and not be afraid to take risks.

 

 

Science:

In Science our focus currently is on the study of liquids and solids. Through experiments our students are discovering that materials that exist as liquids and solids have specific properties and interactions.

Language Arts:

Writing- This past month was poetry month. The students were introduced to many different styles of poetry (acrostic, cinquain and limericks). The book of poems that they are preparing for our Generation’s Day Poetry Slam is just about completed and includes a French poem they are eager to share.

Homework (May 1st-May 5th)

  • Each Monday a student will choose a homework task from the week and it should be completed for the following Monday. There is no homework on Shabbat or Jewish holidays. Please let me know if it is taking more than 10 minutes each night. (send me an email). This homework should be able to be completed independently. Please note, daily reading is required, a book of their choosing.

     

    • Math Monday- The students will practise the math concept introduced. These activities will be either on IXL or in their Must Do folders, which will be located in their note totes. These note totes must be returned each day. This week their math activities are on IXL. Please click on the yellow star to find the assigned items. This week have them work on Level D N.1, N.3 or N.6 Last one is the most challenging.  Do only one.

     

    • Share a Talent Tuesday (optional)-Does your child need to practise their violin or piano lessons? Have them share their talent by adding a video to Flipgrid to be seen by their classmates. This is our chance to celebrate other areas where they shine.

     

     

    • Wrap it up Thursday-Have your child tell us the title and author of the book they have just finished and have them give a detailed reason why we might want to read it next. Record your answer on Flipgrid

Le printemps est ici!

The last two weeks have been full of meaningful learning at the OJCS. We learned C’est and Ce sont. We learned where fruits and vegetables grow; on the trees, above the ground, and below the ground. The kids made presentations about what their families adore, aime, n’aime pas, et déteste. We celebrated the 75th anniversary of Israel by working in different stations, cutting veggies for the pitas and the falafel, and dancing traditional dances. Finally, they worked so responsibly on the project: Mon animal idéal. The students chose or made up their favorite animal. They described its appearance, character, its needs, and its talents. The presentations will take place on Tuesday the 2nd. During reading buddy time with grade 8 on Friday, the children talked with their buddies about their animals and made a list with eight adjectives. I am always impressed by their ability to switch from French to Hebrew and vice versa every time I walk into the class. At the beginning of the school year, I felt like the odd duck out, but now learning another language( I am already trilingual) is just a BEAUTIFUL thing!!!!!

Homework (April 24th-28th)

                             A few reminders…

1. On Wednesday, April 26, students are asked to come in any form of blue and white (still adhering to the dress code) in celebration of Israel’s 75th birthday!!!

2. The school along with the PTA will be providing Falafel in pita with hummus and salad to all the students as one of the many fun stations (the falafel will be gluten-free and we are attempting to find gluten free pitas).  This does not replace lunch.

3. Our Dress Down Day on Friday, April 28th will benefit the Jewish National Fund of Canada, so don’t forget your loonies and toonies!

4. EARLY NOTICE:  Thursday, May 25th will be designated a MILK / PAREVE day in order to be able to serve dairy treats in honour of the holiday of Shavuot!  Please mark your calendars!
